GEOCLIC - Erasmus+ green project in Turkmen universities

15 August 2022
GEOCLIC (New courses on geospatial engineering for climate change adaptation of coastal ecosystems), started in November 2020, is currently being implemented in three Turkmen universities: International University for Humanities and Development of Turkmenistan (IUHD), Turkmen Agricultural University (TAU), and Turkmen State University (TSU). The project involves five EU, three Central Asia countries, and Azerbaijan. CA countries particularly need to have specialists for monitoring and managing coastal ecosystems given the region vulnerability to natural disasters and climate changing. The goal of the project is to modernize the current curricula and develop new Bachelor, Master, and PhD programs for training specialists in the field of ecology management and engineering of coastal zones.
New professionals will have knowledge and skills to use remote sensing tools and geospatial technologies to assess the state of the environment and get closer to solving the negative consequences of the environmental impact in the region.
Turkmen Team participants consider that the work in multinational consortia has very much influence on the developing of their professional competences and intercultural communication skills. As for young participants, the project work gives a unique opportunity to get acquainted with experienced professionals, adopt and transform their experience, and apply it in their own creative work. The young teacher from TAU Govshut Shadurdyyev is one of such optimistic examples and active participant in both projects NICOPA and GEOCLIC.
Govshut expressed a wish to get deeper knowledge in GIS technologies and Engineering for monitoring water bodies and entered a MSc program at the Kazakh-German University in the field of "Integrated Water Resources Management" in 2022.
According to Sheker Ashirmuradova, TSU team leader, the work in GEOCLIC has provided many interesting ideas for TSU students: they are already involved in the implementation of the project tasks and learn how to manage the digital image processing, environmental modeling and management, optical and hyperspectral remote sensing data, and other modern technologies. In 2021 academic year, the research paper by Ykhtiyarov Diyar (TSU student) became the winner of the competition organised by the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan.
In 2021-2022 academic years, TSU students, specializing in ecology, implemented research papers for the  Young Scientists competition on the topics: "The importance of digital mapping and remote monitoring in increasing the productivity of cultivated lands", "Secondary waste treatment for biogas production", "Flower decoration of urban spaces and its importance in the development of eco-culture", and other similar themes.
Assesing the first results of the projects, the partners believe that their joint work will have a positive effect on the regional aspect: there will be good prospects for cooperation between CA and EU universities in the exchange of knowledge and educational resources, as well as training competitive specialists with analytical and research skills.
